Bombardeig
L. Raspall
Oil on canvas
130x97 cm
Heavily abstract and motivic, to the point of being almost decorative, this painting is influenced by the bombing of Plaça Felip Neri during the Civil War. The area of Barcelona that still exists, located in the heart of the Gothic Quarter, and still bears the scars of the conflict in the form of bullet holes in the walls. The artist expresses on canvas the horror and massacre felt empathetically through time, thanks to the scars that physically remain. A gathering and sharing place, the square, became a place of destruction and misfortune. Repentance and sorrow for the impact of war and the destruction of potential, as well as what could have been—a metaphor for a modern situation.
