L. Raspall

Oil on Canvas

50x50 cm

Conceptualised as a self-portrait by the artist, this piece is meant to be a representation of the physical features that he desires to have, provoking the question about the meaning of identity and representation. How can it be a self portrait if it doesn’t represent the true self?

The work takes the image of the subject and transforms it into an idealised version, one of what he would like be seen as - modifying reality. To what point do any of us change and modify reality to present something in a perceived to be better light? In fact, does it ever stop in a world so dominated by perception? Interestingly the subject, although modified, also clearly maintains resemblance to the original.
